About
All pieces are woven with care by Abby Fisher. Monograms, text, and designs are done by a third-party using engraving and scrimshaw. Cuff style bracelets are woven around a flexible brass frame and can be adjusted by gently squeezing. Each piece has a protective polyurethane seal, but they are not waterproof and should not get wet.
Fisher Nantuckets are inspired by the weaving style of the Nantucket Lightship Basket. Originating in the 19th century, this style of weaving began aboard state-commissioned Lightships. Lightships were essentially floating lighthouses that guided ships safely through the rocky shoals off of Nantucket. With most of their work done at night, sailors made baskets to pass the daytime hours and sold them once back at shore. These "Lightship Baskets" were originally used for everyday tasks and in the 1940's, decorative tops were added to make purses and the fashion trend began. One of the lovely things about Lightship purses, often called “friendship baskets", is that they are usually given as a gift and passed down to the next generation. There is also a longstanding tradition of giving a Lightship Basket Purse to a young lady upon her high school graduation. The fashion trend has grown to now include cuff bracelets and other accessories, each representing the rich nautical history of Nantucket.
